What does it mean to be alive? My project explores the proximity between life and death, and the cyclical yet inescapable relationship between the two. There are three scenes acted out in the piece, with the first being the tree and the fungi. The live tree is slowly decaying due to the fungi leeching off of its nutrients, causing the fungi to live. The second is the deer and the hunter, as the deer are idle and unable to control their fate when the hunter, representing death, comes to get them. Lastly, the painting of the life cycle of the pomegranate shows how even though something grows to be strong and lively, it will eventually succumb to biology and decomposition. The harsh streetlamps highlight the deer and the hunter, bringing them together in the contemporary world. The lights also highlight the shininess and material of plastic and how it is neither alive or dead, which is a modern material, even though it is representing a universal concept. To turn on and off, please flip the switch at the bottom. Other than that, please don’t touch anything else.
