Being Southeast Asian diaspora, I was never quite immersed in the culture I was born into, but I still see and love the red lanterns and their imagery, and come Lunar New Year I keep a watchful eye for the gentle glow of lantern light. I used this imagery for my lighting design to create a sky full of these red, celebratory lanterns, floating over calm, shimmering waters. Be it Rapunzel's birthday lanterns in Tangled or the Xiao Lanterns in Genshin Impact's Lantern Rite, the image of lanterns filling the sky is a warm, hopeful, and magical one. Festival lights are a universal experience, and though they vary by different cultures there is something identifiable and uniquely joyful about seeing the glow of a celebratory lantern or luminaria.
