To study how light can convey connection between individuals, I’ve focused on the ritual of sharing meals with those we love. This gentle light effect radiates the homey feeling of breaking bread by manipulating actual food as a tool. Using cotton fabric as a canvas, reminiscent of a tablecloth, I developed natural dyes from various foods to create nuanced relationships between each individual fabric strip and their transparencies. The layered interactions of each strip mirror both the literal medley of foods shared as well as the gathering of individuals around the table; each individual has something to offer to this intimate experience. With at least one other person, pick up any of the frayed quilt edges and slowly move it across the diffused light source, together. As you engage with the cloth, you will notice how the physical movements work to mimic conversations had over meals: a push-and-pull, give-and-take, non-linear experience that requires you to listen closely to others and respond accordingly. You will organically take turns leading and being led, creating the sense of quiet togetherness. Through this conversation, the muted hues gently glow and seem to transform, drawing the users inward for the ultimate feeling of warmth and closeness.
