What a delightful experience it is to get to know a fascinating soul! Meeting them first on the internet, you look at each other’s eyes in virtual meetings. However, you barely know anything about them except for the interesting glow that they seem to emit, making you curious. Then, you meet and converse with them in person, becoming aware of the contour of their body and obtaining glimpses of their mind and heart. Getting closer and closer to them, you eventually enter an intimate relationship, where you are within a holdable distance, and you now can see their core and true colors. To discuss proximity, which refers to the closeness of matters, it is sensible to have two subjects and address their proximal relationship. Using light as the medium, the installation turns itself into one of the subjects and the user into another. Through interaction, the installation depicts the proximal experience of human relationships, bridging online connections and in-person intimacy. The experience is dissected by three phases, each characterized by a different lighting effect and level of closeness: The Eye The first phase of proximity, in which the user is far from the installation whose shape resembles an eye, simulates “knowing someone on the internet.” In this phase, the least information about the “person” is revealed. The small amount of emitted light piques the user’s curiosity to come closer. The Rib Cage The second phase of proximity, in which the user becomes closer to the installation whose shape now resembles the human rib cage, simulates “knowing someone in person.” In this phase, more information about the “person” is revealed. The exterior form becomes more clear, and glimpses of the inside are perceptible through the apertures. The Soul The third phase of proximity, in which the user stands in front of the installation and can pick it up to see the inside, simulates “knowing someone naked.” In this phase, all the information about the “person” is revealed. Not only is the light source that resides inside the shell visible but also is a fascinating lighting effect observable upon being picked up. The experience of going through the three phases encapsulates the experience of getting to know someone charming in real life.
