My idea stems from the idea of being close in proximity and physicality to someone but not being emotionally close. I wanted to create my model around the concept of strangers walking past each other, living next to each other, and generally passing through each other's lives. Especially living in a densely populated city, those living, working, and existing around us create a large impact on our own states of being, although it may not seem obvious. My lighting piece explores this idea through two sets of rotating lanterns passing light onto one another. Each lantern contains an internal lantern, meant to represent each person's "essence" or state of being. The light comes from this internal lantern, and passes through the outer shell and onto the lanterns spinning beside it. The effect of the light that passes through these layers is toned down, as each layer dilutes the light. This creates a sort of "spotty" or fragmented pattern of light that is shone, representing the impact one has on passersby in the individual's life.
