When I was 10, my family moved from Atlanta, Georgia, to Stockholm, Sweden. Being such a long way from my home, friends, and family meant discovering new ways to stay connected and present in each other's life over this new distance. Of course there were the options of Skype, calling, and texting, however, I found my most valuable source of connection was through the act of writing letters and postcards. Even as I grew older and technology advanced, I still kept up with writing postcards and letters to my family in the States as it created a unique and personal tether that communicating through screens didn't have. It was the special combination between the excitement of getting a letter, to the recognition of the handwriting on the addressed envelope, to the reading, to the response. Even though it would be weeks between letters there was this strong sense of connection because of the fact that the sender had actually touched it, spent time writing it, and left their personal mark in the form of their unique handwriting. 'Mailing Intimacy' is based on the special and intimate connection obtained through the act of writing, mailing, and receiving letters. Inclosed within the envelopes you see in front of you are the letters written and sent by each member of my family, as it only seemed fitting to include the marks of the people who inspired this piece in the first place.
