Long before electricity, machinery, or more modern systems of light, flame was where people gathered. It provided warmth, light, and a place of shared presence. Fire is both practical and deeply symbolic; it carries an atmosphere that is difficult to replicate through any other material. Even as the world advances, the quiet experience of sitting beside a bonfire remains something raw and deeply human impossible to recreate. This project imagines a distant future in which that experience no longer exists in its natural form, perhaps becoming outdated or harder to access but leaves us to reconstruct its presence through objects, memory, and feeling. The lamp is built from wood and steel sheets in order to echo the materials and structure of a traditional bonfire while subtly transforming it. The wooden base was measured, cut, sanded, and stained, with sawed lines intentionally left visible to create a textured, almost weathered surface reminiscent of charred wood. Thin sheets of metal were then cut and shaped into pointed, rising half diamonds that suggest the movement of flames. These pieces were inserted into laser cut wooden rings with radial slots, allowing the metal to spread outward and upward like a contained fire. At the center, a vintage amber bulb sits with a warm, steady glow that filters through the metal forms and reflects softly across their surfaces. Real sticks and bark surround the light source, referencing the nostalgic act of physically building a bonfire. They are intentionally imperfect and loosely placed, able to shift and fall apart naturally, inviting the instinct to rearrange and rebuild them by hand. Aember is a sculptural lamp that exists somewhere between memory and invention. It does not attempt to perfectly imitate fire, but instead captures its atmosphere: its warmth, its glow, and the quiet sense of comfort it creates. In this imagined future, the object becomes a kind of preserved ember, a small human attempt to hold onto something ancient. The piece suggests that while technology continues to evolve, the emotional gravity of elemental experiences, like gathering around a fire, remains timeless, resurfacing again and again in the forms we create through time.
