Sleep-wake lamps are becoming increasingly popular as the effects of light on our health and natural rhythming become increasingly evident. Coming from a background in antique lighting restoration with experience in vintage retail, I have endeavored to retrofit Antique Lighting to perform this same sleep/wake function. I love the idea of the nostalgic and elegant forms of the 20th century continuing to exist in our heritage and other spaces in a novel way, while also supporting circadian health. I am specifically drawn to natural materials and exploring the ways they can hold and amplify the natural shift across the cool-warm spectrum over the course of a day. The lamps showcased for this competition are made up of capiz shell, alabaster and metal.
