What if turning on a light could reconnect us to the ritual and craftsmanship of historic street lamps? Before electric lighting, gas street lamps had to be opened and lit by hand, making illumination a small act of care. Filigree brings that interaction into the home by allowing the user to open and close the lamp with a button on the cord, gradually releasing more light and adjusting the brightness. The design is inspired by Victorian gas street lamps, which often featured decorative metalwork with repeating, symmetrical patterns. I designed a custom pattern using those principles and built it into the structure of the lamp. As the lamp opens, light passes through the cut metal and reflects outward, projecting a modern interpretation of the historic pattern onto the surrounding walls and floor.
