Hundredweight draws inspiration from the design language and cultural parallels of the Art Deco era. Using typography to define its form, the luminaire reveals a sculptural profile through pixel-controlled RGB edge lighting. The piece reflects on the cyclical nature of time, returning to the 1920s as we inhabit the 2020s. While technology has advanced dramatically, many of the social and cultural divides of the past remain. Hundredweight reinterprets the Art Deco skyline of New York as both architecture and data, embedding historical newspaper fragments that expose the economic inequalities of the 1920s- to the disparaging inequity of the 2020s. Blending an Art Deco-inspired silhouette with contemporary lighting technology, the piece rises like a luminous skyline emerging from the concrete canyons below.
