This project delves into the topics of mental illness and isolation, which are often considered taboo and ignored by society, leaving those affected with very few resources or support. With the ongoing pandemic, these issues have become even more prevalent, with extended periods of isolation leading to a surge in depression cases. It is essential to acknowledge that these cases are not a result of personal failures, but a response to the unprecedented circumstances. The hanging form in Suspended Silence is illuminated by a small incandescent bulb, which gently reflects onto the crumpled material. The piece aims to be experienced in two parts, first by observing the form's overall shape and movement from a distance, then by stepping inside to experience its cyclical motion. From afar, the form appears as a dark cloud, symbolizing the endless cycle of depression and anxiety, a feeling of hopelessness and spiraling. However, upon closer inspection, the viewer can see the intricate details and complexities hidden within the darkness, reminding us never to judge others based on their outward appearance or behavior. This work is meant to shed light on the issues surrounding mental illness and isolation, inviting viewers to approach them with empathy and understanding. It is a reminder to seek support and resources when navigating these challenges and to never give up hope, as there may be beauty and depth within our imperfections.
