Light pollution is one of the more overlooked ways in which human civilization affects the environment. By keeping the skies lit up 24/7 we disrupt the natural processes of ecosystems. Despite its effects not being as apparent, light pollution is one of the biggest threats to wildlife near metropolitan areas. Organisms that produce bioluminescence are especially vulnerable to the effects of light pollution, though they could also be the key to solving the issue. Scientists have proposed ways of integrating bioluminescence into public light fixtures, which would create harmless soft lighting. My lighting effect is a conceptualization of how bioluminescence could one day be integrated into our daily lives. The floating organic forms reflect the light from the spotlight beneath, exploring the relationship between manmade light and bioluminescence. Through understanding the ways in which humans and the environment affect one another we may gain a better understanding of how to create a world which better serves both.
